I am reconsidering the use of utensils. Maybe utensils are simply overrated. Maybe there is a conspiracy by the utensil makers in the world, and maybe they are trying to make us THINK we need a bunch of utensils. Maybe they are eating hand-held burritos in the back of their stretch limos and laughing all the way to the bank.  I am now imagining them using a giant serving fork to spear the piles of money. I bet it’s happening. Ever think of that?

What I do love is a nice, simple skewer. You can put almost anything on a skewer or a stick, except for applesauce (too messy) and ex-husbands (too kind).

Things that work great on a skewer:

Tortellini Caprese Stick Salad:

  • boil and chill cheese tortellini; add baby tomatoes and basil

Prosciutto and Cantaloupe:

  • use a melon ball to scoop cantaloupe, add store bought prosciutto to a skewer

Fruit:

  • strawberries and blackberries work great for the Fourth of July; kiwi and raspberries can act as a garnish to sparkling water

Pound Cake and Pineapple:

  • cut store-bought pound cake and pineapple into similar sizes, thread onto bbq skewers and grill over medium high heat, turning often until fruit is soft and cake is toasted – approx. 8 mins; drizzle with chocolate or agave nectar

Movie Night with Popcorn and Candy:

  • alternate microwave kettle corn with Nestlé’s Rolo candy for a sweet treat; fun for an Oscar party

Apples and Cheddar:

  • cubes of cheddar cheese and slices of Honeycrisp apples (worth the price) is an ideal snack

and…my favorite…

S’mores On A Stick

Prep time: 10 minutes | Serves 20ppl

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 bag of marshmallows (you can make your own, but really?)
  • 4 cups  chocolate chips
  • bamboo skewers

Directions:

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper
  • Place the graham cracker crumbs in a shallow dish and set aside
  • Spear the marshmallows with the bamboo picks
  • Melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler over medium heat, stirring occasionally (or cheat and microwave in short bursts of 15 seconds until chocolate reaches desired consistency)
  • Dip the marshmallow sticks in the chocolate, one at a time, and let any excess drip off
  • Roll in the graham cracker crumbs and place on the prepared baking sheet
  • Chill for an hour and serve
